Chicago [US], November 27: A Multi-Centre Study for Hands-only CPR Training Assessment Towards Building a “Nation of Lifesavers “in India – Presented at the annual scientific meeting of American Heart Association (AHA) in Chicago, November 16-18, 2024

Failure to rescue a subject sustaining ‘Sudden Cardiac Arrest’ is a significant public health issue: A vast majority of these events occur outside the hospital setting, and are known as “Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrests (OHCA)”. Brain Death sets in within 4-6 minutes without blood circulation; restoring blood flow during the precious first few minutes before an ambulance arrives is a matter of life or death…Time is Brain!

With an estimated survival of less than 10%, OHCA remains one of India’s leading causes of death*. Raising community awareness and training lay public in rescuing a person sustaining OHCA is known as Bystander Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (Bystander CPR). Since it is sufficient to perform CPR using hands only, without mouth-to-mouth breaths, on a teen or adult who suddenly collapses. This is also known as Hands -Only CPR (HOCPR).

A recent study (meta- analysis & systematic review- Critical Care, 2020;24:61) showed that the outcomes of OHCA have improved over the last 40 years; but the benefit is largely to those receiving bystander CPR. The bystander CPR rate in India is under 10%, far below the target of 62% set by AHA. The need gap is large and the opportunities for closing this gap are many in a large heterogeneous population of India to save lives.

A Collaborative between AHA and Several AIIMS is conceived to improve outcomes of OHCA

Under the leadership of Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, a collaborative of 5 AIIMS (Mangalagiri, Bhubaneswar, Raipur, Deoghar, and Bathinda) and AHA was launched in 2022 to serve as a platform to build A Nation of Lifesavers, India. One component of this unique initiative of ‘distributed leadership’ across a diverse topographic, linguistic, cultural & socioeconomic landscape is to train the trainers, followed by community outreach to increase awareness of OHCA & train communities to make them HOCPR ready.

The data presented at AHA Scientific Meeting on November 18th in Chicago related to the results of pre- and post- training survey of 113,828 trainees across 5 AIIMS, and the prior work done under Dr. Ravikumar’s directorship at SVIMS Tirupati to serve as a pilot study for validation. This is one of the largest training assessment projects done to date, to demonstrate the effectiveness in HOCPR training to quantify awareness, knowledge and skills development. One of the novel findings of this study is that, there are wide variations (heterogeneity) in both the pre-training as well as post-training characteristics of the trainees across the 5 regions of India. The findings are extremely valuable to show that: one size does not fit all; and that the strategies to optimise bystander CPR should be tailored to suit the local/ regional needs. In addition, the collaborative proposes to establish long term OHCA registries in the regions served by respective AIIMS, for surveillance and monitoring.

By expanding the number of lifesavers in each of the regions and enlisting more AIIMS to serve as nodal centres for diverse populations, this collaborative will serve to save hundreds, if not thousands of lives across India.

  3. Unlike the previous conditions, now an officer has to fetch only 75 marks on an average in the last 3 years appraisal in order to appear for the promotion process.
  4. Reduction in debarment period from three years to one year only in case of refusal of promotion.
  5. Halting of direct scale 3 recruitments in PSBs.
  6. Inclusion of batch concept in the promotion process (regardless of date of joining, candidates belonging to same batch will be eligible to appear in promotion process).

In the last decade, AIUBOSA has been showing the way when it comes to issues of officer cadre on national level. The union is committed to:

  1. Protect the public sector character of the PSBs.
  2. Achieve regulated working hours for bank officers.
  3. Bring 5 days banking with all Saturdays off.
  4. Better wage revision for the bank officers.
  5. Maintain the job safety of public sector bankers.
  6. Removal of anomalies in the promotion and transfer exercises.
  7. Conversion of specialist officers to generalist stream as per Govt. of India guidelines.
  8. Ensure transparency and equal opportunity for all officers.

Some of the prevalent issues troubling the Indian banking sector are: frequent reforms by the govt., lack of RBI monitoring and control, private and foreign players dominating in govt decision making, privatization and merger of banks, non-action on major defaulters, coercive attitude of bank managements, uncontrolled disbursal of loans without security, manipulation of financials and performance data of the banks, departure from core-banking to “we also do banking”, acute shortage of staff, indifference to concerns and wellbeing of the employees, pressure through targets/punishment/daily reviews, ever deteriorating work culture, lack of well-defined policies and their implementation, media maligning the brand image of PSBs, and so on. Despite these challenges, AIUBOSA is committed to fight for the bank officers and holds the view that being a mute spectator will only increase the gravity of the already alarming situation. If the nation has to progress its financial sector has to perform well, which is impossible without the PSBs doing good.

At the end, one can only say that for any matter pertaining to the rights and welfare of the bank officers’ community, the union is paving the way through its gen-next leaders under the charismatic guidance of its General Secretary who imbibes integrity and dedication across the association. AIUBOSA believes in bringing positive change through active participation of officers and work without fear or favor to anyone.

I, Pria Warrick, a Clinical Psychologist and a Soft Skills Celebrity trainer, recently, while conducting a workshop at the Indian Naval Academy in Kunnur, Kerala, was struck by a documentary depicting the heroic actions during the Pulwama terrorist attack. The footage captured a Major heroically running into flames to save lives, showing unwavering courage as he comforted injured soldiers and coordinated their rescue. He earned a Medal of Honour for his bravery, but it sparked a profound question in my mind: what drives someone to risk their life for others?

In the military, we honour self-sacrifice with medals. In contrast, the corporate world often rewards those who prioritize personal gain over team welfare with bonuses. So, does this mean military personnel are inherently better humans? Not necessarily! It’s all about the environment. Today, if we question the Major, why he acted so selflessly, he might simply say, “They would have done it for me too.”

Where do these feelings of trust and co-operation come from. Firstly, these are feelings and not instructions. You can’t instruct people to trust and co-operate.

To understand this, let’s take a step back in time. Thousands of years ago, humans faced constant threats—wild animals, harsh weather, and scarce resources. To survive, they formed social networks—a “circle of safety” within tribes, where trust and cooperation flourished. While some guarded the tribe at night, others slept peacefully, knowing they were protected.

Now, let’s relate this to the Modern world. We are still surrounded with dangers, like- economic fluctuations, uncertainty of job and business insecurity. Uncertainty of Stock Market, Pandemic, or a new business startup that renders your business obsolete, or a competitive world that makes you insecure and frustrated because it steals your growth. We have no control over these forces.

So how can leaders foster a sense of safety and belonging in their organizations?

During a conversation with Ratan Tata about how his company managed to keep paying salaries during the COVID-19 pandemic—while many Western leaders opted for layoffs—he simply stated, “My dear Pria Warrick, our people are our strength.” This profound insight made me realize that constantly battling with our own people within the organisation can lead to organizational catastrophies.

This brings us to an innovative leadership approach I like to call the “Parenting Style in Leadership.” A parent like Ratan Tata would never abandon his children (staff). A parent would never lay off his children, but would in times of crisis provide opportunities, trainings, guidance, confidence and coaching to non-performers, whereby a sense of belonging is instilled by a leader which results in a collective team.

In times of financial strain, while many leaders opt to cut jobs for some, what if we considered reducing salaries for everyone instead? This nurturing leadership style not only preserves jobs for all, but also fosters teamwork and loyalty among employees. This is what a parent would do. Think- More teamwork with faithful employees, along with a feeling of brotherhood. Wow! A workplace with very little conflict.  So, let’s embrace this new style of Parental leadership—one that nurtures rather than divides!

Carbon Minus has recently confirmed the successful award of two significant solar projects under the Maharashtra State Government’s “Mukhyamantri Solar Krishi Vikas Yojana 2.0” (MSKVY 2.0). This initiative marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. The objective of this scheme is to solarize 30% of feeders by 2025. For this, 7,000 MW decentralized solar projects will be implemented. With this, farmers will be able to get electricity during the day.

The awarded projects include 174 MW solar power projects in Turnkey-EPC mode with Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Limited (MahaGenco-MSPGCL) and another 730 MW project with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). These projects are set to play a crucial role in enhancing the state’s renewable energy capacity and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Meanwhile, the 730 MW project is expected to deliver substantial energy savings and reduce carbon emissions, furthering Maharashtra’s vision for a sustainable energy future.

Both projects align with the government’s broader strategy under MSKVY 2.0, which aims to promote solar energy usage among farmers and enhance their livelihoods through green energy solutions.
