The Festival de Cannes witnessed an enlightening panel discussion on the future of filmmaking, led by Vipul Agarwal, the visionary founder of Mugafi and Leeds1888 on May 21, 2023.  Joined by esteemed futurists Sander Saar and Harsha Prabhakar (Rao), as well as influential leaders from the Indian Government, the panel explored the rapid advancements in technology and its profound impact on the world of cinema.

Titled “Entertainment tech, Future of Media with AI, Importance of creativity and power shift,” the panel discussion shed light on the transformative power of AI and its influence on the future of filmmaking. As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it has become evident that every aspect of filmmaking, from ideation and writing to execution, is being revolutionised.

One of the key takeaways from the discussion was the shifting emphasis towards exceptional ideas and their effective distribution. With the advent of AI, filmmakers will have more time to focus on the creative aspects of their projects rather than getting entangled in laborious tasks such as execution, set designing, and team management. This shift in focus will undoubtedly result in the emergence of groundbreaking ideas and storytelling techniques that captivate audiences like never before.

Moreover, the integration of AI tools across various stages of filmmaking is set to significantly reduce production costs. Experts predict that in the coming years, filmmaking costs will decrease by a staggering 1/100th, allowing even independent filmmakers with limited resources to bring their visions to life. This cost reduction opens up new possibilities and levels the playing field, fostering a more inclusive industry where creativity knows no bounds.

The democratisation of creation is another promising aspect of the technological advancements in the film industry. In the past, only individuals with substantial financial resources could succeed in the world of cinema. However, with the availability of AI-powered tools and resources, anyone with a passion for storytelling can learn and transform their ideas into tangible films. This new era of democratised creation promises to bring forth diverse voices, fresh perspectives, and a plethora of unique stories that resonate with global audiences.

As the future unfolds, we can expect a surge in high-quality content. With filmmaking becoming more accessible and democratised, talented creators from all walks of life will have the opportunity to showcase their stories, ensuring a rich tapestry of narratives in various genres, languages, and styles. Each viewer will have an endless array of captivating content tailored to their preferences, leading to a more immersive and fulfilling entertainment experience.
